In the light of actual and potential applications from Venezuela to Greenland, what are the implications for investors and companies exposed to the Americas?
In the opening weeks of 2026, President Trump has started revealing the practical import of his “corollary to the Monroe Doctrine” that formed part of the new US National Security Strategy unveiled in December 2025. After the military operation capturing the Venezuelan president and the declared intention to “own” Greenland, further applications of this doctrine are possible in Mexico, Colombia, Panama and Cuba – and perhaps elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere. The stated national security rationale cites a range of threats – military, migration, narcotics supply: but the goal of US pre-eminence in the Western Hemisphere also has an economic dimension focused mainly on Latin America’s deepening trade, investment and technology ties with China.
This webinar on the outlook and risks in the various actual and potential theatres of “Donroe Doctrine” action will be hosted by Christopher Granville and Grace Fan, the lead analysts on these themes at TS Lombard, the macroeconomics and geopolitics research unit within GlobalData.
